CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Bright light shining in my eyes awoke me with a shot of adrenaline. Growling like the animal I was so close to shifting into, I jerked away only to slam back into the headrest of the Jeep. It took a moment to remember what had followed the attack: me collapsing into Ty’s arms. His scent was near, as was Gripp’s. The engine of my Jeep hummed in harmony with the thrum of my all-terrain tires. Everything else felt so fuzzy—smells, the feel of the seat beneath my hand, even my thoughts.

I groaned and rolled my head in his direction. Why was it so hard to move? My eyes didn’t want to open.

The light faded away, along with the sound of a car receding like the tide.

Ty’s voice filled the cab. “I do not know, but I have the needle.”

Another voice followed his, sounding farther away, carrying an echo. It took me a moment to realize it was someone on the other end of a phone call. “Bring her in. Clare will take a look at her and find out.”

The familiarity of the voice raised the urge in me to growl and bare my fangs. But why? Who was it? My memory refused to connect the dots. It didn’t help that Gripp kept up a constant babble of nervous pops and gurgles.

“We are on our way.”

I tried to ask where, but my mouth wouldn’t open any better than my eyes would. Something in me fought hard against the fog, insisting I needed to know, insisting I wouldn’t like the answer. But the harder I fought, the further into the fog I sank.
